International Day for Disability
3rd December 2009
December brought a nice surprise to end the year. Following enquiries at the Mobility Road Show, we received an invitation to take part in the annual International Disability Day at the Borough of Dagenham and Redbridge. The event sponsored by the Borough was held in two halls at the Dagenham and Redbridge Football Club. Stalls in both halls were manned by all manner of people providing the support and the needs of people with disabilities. Tea and coffee was available throughout the day and a buffet lunch was provided for over 250 people, before presentations in the afternoon.
The Mayor was present most of the day, talking to both stall representatives and participants. He spoke of the efforts the Borough was making to improve all swimming and sports venues to satisfy the needs of people with disabilities. Local football clubs were combining to provide facilities and training for autistic children. He also announced the construction of a multi million pound sports complex including an Olympic size swimming pool with facilities and instruction for all abilities, to commence in January 2010. Later in the day he started the balloon race, with balloon for each disabled person.
Thameside displayed picture boards and DVD’s in one hall and screened a background video in the other. The video was a great success. During the afternoon we gave a demonstration of both Duo and Combi dancing. It was so well received that a representative of the Council announced that if there was sufficient response they would consider setting up wheelchair dancing as a local activity. The organiser of the event was so taken with the possibility, he is proposing a demonstration by the local group at next year’s event. The event was a massive success and we look forward to another next year.
